Last Month, A Student Came Out As Non–Binary And

told the classroom that they wanted to be called they them versus she and her and my son came home Braden. He came home and he was really struggling with it because they and them are plural pronouns and he wasn’t sure how to use them. He was worried about messing up and so. I gave him the advice to just call her by name and so that is what he was trying to do He had he this is not a person. He comes in contact with um.

He Doesnt Hang Out With Her.

he was sticking up for a friend in music class. She was shaming this friend for not using the proper pronouns and after he saw his friend being belittled. He finally stood up and said he doesn’t have to use pronouns. He it’s his.

To Not Use Pronouns Tell Me

what has the process been like since that email well when did the email. When did you get the email and then tell us what has the process been like. Since then sure so i he called me on a monday. It was April 25th. He called me forewarned me of the email.

I Received The Email.

It was a one-page kind of form letter with a blurb saying that he my son was being charged with sexual harassment for not using proper pronouns and then . He asked to set up a meeting with myself and Braden on tuesday. The following day, we didn’t receive any more information. We didn’t know who the complaint was about or we assumed that it was about this person, but we didn’t know the details of it.

  • harassment using proper pronouns asked

We Had No Idea What Braden

had done wrong. He also said that I was if I wasn’t available. He would meet with Braden on his own and I told him absolutely not. I will be there and we went into a conference room where they typed up everything. We were saying and he asked my son a bunch of questions and Braden answered honestly.

You Know To The Best Of His Ability

and that was it and when it was done the the principal said to Braden do you have any questions and Brian said he sat there for a second and he said yeah. I do what is this going to do to my future. How am I going to get into college. If I have these on my permanent record. Am I going to be able to get scholarships.

I Mean It Broke My Heart.

I just for him to be concerned about that when he’s. being a kid when he’s not being mean he’s a a kind person right um so I the principal couldn’t answer he just shrugged his shoulders and said I don’t know and we left tell me what the charges are. If you think that these stand up like is this sexual harassment under title nine tell us just kind of your first reaction and hearing what her son was being charged with yeah as you said he’s being charged with sexual harassment under title Ix and there’s nothing remotely close to this in title Ix you won’t find the word mispronouncing anywhere In the regulations you won’t find it anywhere in the law. Sexual harassment is typically meant for things like rape and groping and you know quid pro quo sexual favors really egregious stuff.

Theres A Catch-All For Severe Pervasive And

conduct that’s so objectively unreasonable that it. denies someone access to education and obviously mispronouncing isn’t remotely close to that in fact, courts have even made clear that teasing and even gender-based insults doesn’t count under title Ix.
