While this corona virus rages on shutting down mass gatherings and industry across the globe every once in a while we actually get a glimpse of some beauty in the midst of all this right.
This Massive Shutdown Can Actually Afford To
some luxuries that normal times would deny us and as an Orthodox Christian today is one of those days today on the Orthodox calendar is Holy Saturday. It’s the day we commemorate Christ’s descending into Hades and liberating the righteous souls that were held captive there until the coming of the Messiah the Christ to save and redeem and transfigure the cosmos with his glorious light and the harrowing of hell as it’s often referred. To in the West the liberation of Adam and Eve and all the righteous from Hades is considered the first resurrection as it were, and it prepares us for the glorious resurrection at midnight tonight when all Orthodox faithful sing out Christos Anesti in the Greek or Christos Voss Gracie in the Russian Christ is risen so today we anticipate the celebration of Christ’s resurrection from the dead with the commemoration wealth. It’s more than just a mere commemoration. It’s an actual reliving a repart issah paiting in Christ vanquishing the darkness of Hades with his incorruptible divine and infinite light and so as part of this real living out of this event.
The Orthodox Church Has Been Blessed With
an extraordinary miracle that happens every Holy Saturday every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The church that was erected by the Crusaders over the very. spot where Jesus Christ was buried and rose again. It’s called the Miracle the Holy fire. It’s, also referred to as the Miracles of Holy Light, now generally speaking tens of thousands of Christians gathered together on this day at the church all packed into the Holy Sepulchre Church and they together watched the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem enter into Christ’s tomb and come out with a miraculously appearing divine flame that’s then spread out to all people present in the church and their candles and through them.
Indeed, It Spreads Route Quite Literally The
world now. Of course with the benefit of modern technology, we can watch this miracle unfold on Youtube on a number of past years. But this year 2020 because of the corona virus quarantines we actually have the benefit of being able to watch this very ancient ceremony close up without all the clutter. and obstructions of massive crowds now! This is a very very ancient ceremony and it’s been performed uninterrupted for centuries and it said that this miracle the holy fire reveals the very transfigured of light by which Christ was raised from the dead and this is how Gregory of Nisan, the 4th century and John Demoscene later in the 8th century interpret the miracle. They both write about how the Apostle Peter saw the holy light in Christ’s tomb the Holy Sepulchre after Christ’s resurrection.
The Church Historian Eusebius Records Eyewitness
testimonies of a miraculous fire appearing in Jerusalem during the Easter celebration around the year 162 UK and so since then since the mid-2nd century. This miracle and the ceremony that surrounds it may in fact be the oldest unbroken successive Christian ceremony in the world. The Holy fire takes place every single year at the same time. In the same manner in the same spot century after century there’s simply no other miracle known to occur, so regularly over some sentries and again with this coronavirus. We ironically have the privilege of getting a close-up look an uninhibited view of the ceremony.
We Could See The Greek Orthodox Patriarch
of Jerusalem preparing in the sanctuary putting on his sacred clothing to prepare to enter into the tomb of Christ. He then enters into the original church built over the Holy Sepulchre and walks in procession around the tomb three times. Counterclockwise to mimic the movement of the stars above. The important thing here to notice is that Orthodox Christianity interprets the resurrection as the redemption of the entire Cosmos. The whole of created time and space is incorporating Christ transformative life, death and resurrection, and then we could see the Patriarch just robe as he prepares to.
Into The Tomb Into His Hands
are given thirty-three candles bundled together each candle representing a year in Christ’s life now interestingly, you’ll see a Palestinian guard standing at the door that’s the norm that fact of the ceremony is often hidden from sight because of all the obstruction of the tens of thousand people packed into the church. During the ceremony. Many people don’t know that the tomb and the Patriarch are actually both searched by authorities were either Jewish or Arabic police. Most usually not Christian believers, which offers some semblance of corroboration that both the Patriarch and the tomb are indeed without any ignition source and so the Patriarch enters into the tombs you can see along with the guard and then here’s what we understand happens. While the Patriarch is in the tomb.
He Kneels In Front Of The Stone Slab
on which Christ dead. body was laid and after reciting prayers. A mystical bluish light appears covering the stone of slab. Now This bluish light was actually corroborated by a Russian physicist by the name of Andrei Volkov, who headed it a scientific mission to investigate the holy fire back in 2008. Now Volkov is a specialist in the study of low heat plasma which is an ionized gas.
Its The Most Common State Of Matter In
the universe, but it’s actually rarely found here on Earth and Volkoff is part of the scientific world that’s learning to reproduce and utilize heat plasma. So Volkov, along with four other scientists who were also present published an article back in 2012 in the Russian journal entitled Science and Religion and there they detailed how they witnessed a dramatic spike in the electromagnetic radioactive measurements. At the moment the Holy fire was appearing while the Patriarch. was inside the tomb, which was preceded by inexplicable appearances of plasma in the form of blue light that filled the church from which an electrical discharge ignited the fire. Now the fascinating thing here which a scientists recognize is that the electromagnetic plasma discharges were not miraculous enough given the desert-like conditions in the church was that the fire that was ignited by this electrical charge it was contained it was controlled it was directed solely to the candles.
In Other Words, Its Miraculous Enough
to have the sudden appearance of this plasma and radiation spike an electrical discharge, but nothing explains why it is that the Patriarchs clothing or any other fabric doesn’t ignite as well along with the candles and so this bluish light appears covering the stone slab where the body of Christ was laid and then this light ignites the 33 candles bundled together in. Patriarchs hand and then it happens the dark tomb lights up with this Holy fire and the Patriarch comes out of course usually a massive crowd all holding their own candles, and he distributes the holy light to the faithful throughout the church and the church bells begin to ring throughout Jerusalem and then the flame indeed spreads quite literally all throughout the Orthodox world and many worth it all homes it burns throughout the year. It’s an astonishing liturgical miracle, but like I said, has been celebrated every year perhaps longer than any other Christian ceremony and perhaps most beautiful in all of this is out the miracle. The Holy Fire has become the occasion for nothing less than the reawakening and the re-emergence of Christian civilization.
In Our Time, The Holy Fire
is quite literally reigniting Christian civilization right now as we speak take for example, what’s happening. Russia and the Holy fire has risen to great prominence in the Russian Orthodox Church in the years since its post–soviet resurgence and experts recognizes the Holy fires in many ways symbolizes the rebirth of Orthodox. Christianity is central to Russia’s post-soviet national identity in many respects. The flame is being more and more treated like a national symbol after the flames appearance in the Holy Sepulchre a plane specially carries the flame to Russia and a seal torch and it’s actually the same torch that’s used for the Olympic flame and as such it’s greeted by thousands of believers at Moscow‘s Vnukovo Airport.

national UK. It’s then brought to the Easter service officiated by Patriarch Kiril beginning at midnight Moscow time at what is the official Cathedral of Russia Christ. The Saviour Cathedral And it’s then presented to President Vladimir Putin, who’s in attendance representing the nation before God and so The Holy fire really has become a symbol of Russia. ‘s Christian rebirth as the resources of that rebirth are directly linked to the Holy Land and the very place of Christ’s resurrection and of course.
The Flame Is Distributed To Parishes Throughout Russia
to nearly 50 cities and the organization that funds the flames distribution throughout Russia has actually begun delivering the Holy fire to various corners of the earth, including for the very first time just a couple of years ago. Here in the United States and so the flame is being seen as a symbol of the reemergence of Christian civilization throughout the world and that I believe next to the resurrection of Christ is perhaps the greatest miracle of them all and so to all my Orthodox brothers and sisters and of course to everyone all over the world. A blessed Pasca to you all Christos Anesti, Christos vos Grecia Christ is risen amen.
