Patrick Henry College Recently Brought More Honor

to the exciting renewal of classical education nationwide. Not only is the small liberal arts school one nine of the last twelve national mock-trial championships, but Patrick Henry just received international accolades as the first place winner in an international mock trial competition held in Geneva, Switzerland. As such, the debate team demonstrated the enduring legacy of the classical rhetoric tradition even over the likes of Yale Duke and the University of Virginia. Patrick Henry’s achievements. Why Is This Why Is It That

these small classical schools whose budgets can’t even compare with these other schools why are they so successful, But we have to understand is that rhetoric was historically central to the formation of classical culture the various constituents of classical intellectual life. educational system, its legal and political practices, its ceremonies, literature and art. They were all founded upon the art and practice of rhetoric. On the one hand, a concern for rhetoric was certainly practical in that rhetorical training false of an educated elite of judges, senators, governors, military leaders all responsible for the welfare of the city-state, but on the other hand, there was a cultural significance to rhetoric because illiterate all read the same books and poets and histories because they all study the same music, art and sport. They shared a common life world and were able to speak to each other in the rest of society as embodiments of what were considered humanity’s highest ideals.

This Classical Emphasis On Rhetoric Provided The

foundation for the emergence of a distinctively Christian culture. Christians throughout the Mediterranean kept the basic structure of classical curriculum. They emphasized reading classic texts. Homer and Hesiod and the poets and the philosophers. They emphasized mathematics and music science and even sports, but all of which were now reconfigured around Christ who is the logos the one in whom all things cohere.

Since The 1990S, Theres Been Nothing Less

than a Renaissance of classical Christian education throughout the United States. For example, there were only 10 classical schools in the nation. In 1994 today, there are over 230 and since 2002 student enrollment in classical schools has gone from 17,000 nationwide to over 41,000 and we’re already seeing the effects of this kind of education. As of 2015, classical schools have the highest UK scores in each of the three categories of reading, math and writing among all independent religious and public schools. However, could the recovery of classical education mean more than Mock Trial and UK achievements.

Students Are Once Again Reading The

classical texts and great books. They’re reciting the same epic poetry studying the classical languages, developing comparable musical literacy worshipping through traditional liturgy and writing and orally defending theses. Through this renewed Christian culture, They’re rediscovering what it means to be truly human particularly as our humanities been restored in the redemptive work of Christ and so the re-emergence of classical education over the last few decades is doing far more than simply winning competitions and training our students to think with trophies at hand. That appears that our students are part of nothing less than a civilizational Renaissance that revitalized intellectual tradition of a distinctive and vibrant Christian culture hi friends.
