Whats Going On Guys This Is Ryan With

our K outpost? And there’s this story going around from io9 from Gizmodo about Canon and why Canon and the way we view it the way people obsess about what is can and what isn’t canon? You know continuity things that matter history stakes. You know all of these things how our obsession with canon is really killing current storytelling and I think it’s pretty laughable because to me without any continuity without any Canon, what does it even mean they just want people to not think about anything just consume consume consume and guess what a Lucasfilm employee specifically the one who’s in charge of Canon. Matt Martin, a member of the Lucasfilm story Group, which is supposed to be something meaningful which is supposed to be something that matters which is supposed to be something that keeps track of what. is canon? What isn’t canon? What this means and what doesn’t mean he agrees with this article. He doesn’t like the fact that everyone’s obsessed with Canon, probably because it makes his job harder because as we know Disney Canon is an effing mess.

There Is No Continuity In Disney Star

Wars in just a couple years since they have axed the expanding universe decided to throw it away start their own new. Disney can and everything new everything Tynan. There are more problems, more discrepancies more continuity errors than we ever had in the expanded universe and it’s because you have people like this working for them. Matt Martin right here who again every time I talk about Matt Martin. I say that I normally see him treating fans pretty well for the most part.

He Is Someone Who Does Patiently

answer a lot of questions but the problem. Is he’s just not very good at his job and right here you can see Matt Martin says yes everyone should read this it’s a much more articulate way of discussing something I’ve often tried to crunch down into 280 characters. It’s also why I choose or not to not answer or give frustratingly vague answers to many questions thrown my way here on Twitter because we’re too fascinated with Canon you know the thing that is his responsibility to maintain. Now we are gonna go over this article a little bit. I do have to say that Jade shadow Mara Jade did a a really awesome video breaking out more in-depth on this article we’re kind of gonna skim it a little bit Cuz I kind of want to focus on Matt Martin a little more let’s look at his comments about the article.

Well Take A Look At The

article and then read Matt Barnes history and why this is no surprise to anyone that someone with his little interest and actually keeping continuity why he would like this article and you can see here The thread continues. I should probably just save this link and use as my reply to is this Canon questions for the rest of my life. Also that image is a solid pole. It’s an image of him throwing a book away that’s pretty good okay as with any post involving the C word not the bad one but Canon, which seems to be bad in your world. This had become very engaging and distracting conversation all very polite thanks everyone but I’m gonna mute this thread and get back to work and now there’s tons of people in the comments, saying that yeah we kind of like Canon.

Canon Kind Of Means Something To Us

It means it’s something you can expect It’s means that there is some kind of history, some kind of lore that things matter and that things have stakes, but again these people just don’t seem to care let’s take a look at the actual article right here from Gizmodo io9. Our fascination with Canon is killing the way we value stories as the pop culture we love becomes increasingly dominated by vast franchises of interconnected worlds and stories. So does it become dominated by one singular question from diehard fans is this the thing is the thing we’re about to consume canon to everything else we’ve consumed before it’s an attitude that’s turning our love of stories into some bizarre archival competition and on one hand, listen I can sit here and I can look at this from a perspective and I can. say you know Yeah? I think that if Canon is number one the only thing you care about above all else above any story anything like that then Yeah that may be kind of a weird view to take when you look at a story because how good the story is also matters but I don’t think you can just discount Canon because that is important without something without knowing whether something is canon or not. You can’t really tell if it matters to this grand overarching story that they are trying to tell if it fits in or if it’s some kind of else world tale Now that you can’t enjoy those you can, but it has a different meaning.

Cannon Is Not An Inherently Bad Thing.

Of course imperfect. It can provide structure to chaos and it can bride a sense of not just continuity but stakes as that continuity progresses. Yes all the reasons that it’s important to so many people. The ideal its character is barely impact of events on their journeys across not just one narrative, but many allowing them to grow and change to appointment.

It Might Even Be Entirely Different

kinds of people compared to when we first met them. There’s still plenty of room for variety and interpretation even in a relatively strictly defined Canon just look at Star Wars and the kind of stories. It can still tell despite the mandate from high that anything told must fit into what’s been established since Disney took over the franchise and to be honest it’s not all that different. When you look at the old expanded universe they had tiers of cannon hierarchy of. Cannon? What mattered the absolute most all the way down to what was not canon with what was told and everything was very strictly defined.

It Was This Way For 35 Years Almost

40 years until Disney took over. They said that everything is going to be canon and unfortunately, the person that they put in charge the people that they put in charge. Just don’t give enough of a crap about it there are people like Matt Martin who don’t want you to talk about canon. They just want you to sit there and enjoy it just eat the popcorn consume what they are feeding you but the but those stories benefit from the added weight of being definitive interpretations or events that flesh out an entire galaxy’s worth of stories, but where Canon or rather our hunger for it goes terribly wrong is whether something matters or not. becomes the base standard for how we consider a piece of media and of course they’re talking about how people use this as a lead ism and phantom.

If You Dont Know What Canon

is or is not There’s a specific line here but craving for above all else is a toxic attitude Yes wanting something to be Canon is toxic, wanting to know what Canon is and is not is toxic. According to Gizmo, and according to Matt Martin, according to Lucasfilm that’s what he is saying they go on to talk about how they are We criticize things just too much for their continuity. Because we want to know about it, which I think is just ridiculous to me. It’s not that much of a stretch to ask if something is can if this matters or not and to want some continuity in the stories that you’re consuming. again or else you have things like the sequel trilogy, Even episode 7 to 8 to 9.

They Dont Make Sense Without With

one another. There is no continuity there. Therefore the stakes don’t make any sense and they’re not believable and again right here. This is kind of how he wraps it up. It’s fine if you want something to matter to a world and characters you care about but it shouldn’t be the end-all be-all of your investment in them and this is ironic too because this entire article is basically saying if you care about Canada above everything else go F yourself you’re terrible you’re toxic, then he says this fandom is such a wide shareable passion full of different opinions and interpretations about a thing united by a shared vested interest in love for storytelling telling valuing the sterile facts of those stories more than the.

To Make Us Feel Make Us

think or feel is a sad thing indeed, so yes Fandoms so awesome has so many different viewpoints. So many shared passions all this stuff, but if you think like this go after yourself of course that’s always how it is. But I just wanted to wrap this up with things that show Matt Martin has never really cared about canning. This is when someone asks him a simple question about the rise of Scott Walker, What did pride mean when he said Jam their speeders how would they have done that if the resistance was using speeders and he says it’s Star Wars the tech is made up they would have jammed up by pressing the jam Button I assume making a Spaceballs joke wasn’t meant to sound rude or anything that’s just one of those things that separates Star Wars from sci-fi. work out because the story says they do rather than because some deeply thought-out scientific explanation and we know that’s just not true from so many years and years of Star Wars stories and a lot of science that goes behind it and to just say that it’s Star Wars.

It Just Works We Just Threw

this line in there because no one understood that what they were talking about again typical Matt Martin and then here where he actually says that he did his job when so many people were confused because it definitely seemed like they were indicating that Palpatine was indeed the one who created Anakin Skywalker for a whole year. People wanted this impression because of all the articles that came out. Matt Martin says that listen it’s part a his job to make sure there’s no confusion like that if there would have been something. That I would have made sure it didn’t get printed well guess what this is a pretty confusing visual and for over a year.

People Ran With It Saying That Palpatine Was

Anakin’s father so I guess you didn’t do a great job of that then when they just talk about someone talks about how tough it would be or how they would like to see legends brought back and have another storyline continuing the legend story line. Matt Martin says it’s just a lot of work and money than I think you realize maybe one day who knows but we’ve been over this it’s just too difficult for them to keep track of these stories and then maybe this one the best one of all. When Matt Martin did not even realize that Ray’s father was a failed clone of Palpatine, which let’s be honest is garbage, but it’s. In a book it’s in the official novelization and that is the official Star Wars Canon Matt Martin had no idea we can go over this.

  • canon questions rest
  • canon isn canon means
  • doesn like fact obsessed canon
  • disney canon effing mess continuity
  • obsessed canon probably makes job

He Says, Where Does It Say

Rey’s Dad’s a clone it’s literally in the novel. He did not know this. The Lucasfilm story group did not know it oh well that’s not the one I read I usually read the first or.
