What If I Told You Were Going Somewhere

that’s been forming for 6 million years and not only that it’s still active it’s still alive it’s called Howe Caverns today Treehouse is going to the depths of the earth out of this thing even get here in the first place well it’s not about the history of the cave. We really have to go back almost 400 million years. At one point in time. All of this region was covered by the Atlantic ocean and the ocean that existed in this area had all these organisms living in it shelled creatures plants over time. These things are going to die of course send along the ocean floor.

The Layers Of Those Dead Organisms

will build up over time and become compressed and hardened, and that is actually what becomes the rock that you see all around us here over time. The water on the surface will start seeping down to the ground through the soil and it’ll absorb carbon dioxide from the soil from the dead organisms in the soil, and this will actually make the water slightly acidic so if you’re getting dripped on inside the cave it’s technically not water it’s carbonic acid similar to seltzer water. This cave has been in the process of forming for proximately 6 million years. We believe as long as water continues entering the ground is going to continue to follow the same path that water ahead of it started Carving out so right here what are some of the different rocks we can actually see beyond the walls. The ceilings of the cave are all composed of limestone rock, but in addition to the limestone, we can also see mineral formations building up along the rocks.

In This Area, We Have Calcite Formations

which tend to look like ice, maybe wax sometimes on the walls and on the ceilings of the cave. There’s three different kinds of calcite formations in this particular cave. Now the only difference between the formations is what the water actually does when it reaches the cave when the water drips down off of the ceiling that is what causes the stalactites and stalagmites to begin forming and over here the water is not dripping, but rather flowing over the walls of the cave, and that is what allows the flowstone formation is to be deposited. How old is that stalagmite stalagmites typically form at a rate of one cubic inch every 100 years. And this is one of our largest formations something that size could easily be as old as half a million years.

Who Is How The Name Actually Comes From

Lester how and he was the man who discovered this cave on May 22nd in 1842. He came to this area many years before that with his family his wife and three kids and they settled not far from here and started a dairy farm and the story goes that the herd of cows that Lester owned would frequently roam on to his neighbor’s property and used this one spot for grazing every day. Finally he decided okay I need to know what’s going on here. He he followed his cows over to that spot and when he got there he started feeling a cool breeze coming up from under the ground and he realized that his cows had been using. This as a form of air conditioning every day so after he discovered this area where the air was coming out of the ground.

He Cleared Away The Hillside And

ended up discovering a small opening which ended up leading down here into this cave. Lester, how thought this was the most amazing thing he had ever seen so after they had finished exploring the cave. Lester made an offer to his neighbor to buy the land with the entrance off of him. Lester how paid his neighbor one hundred dollars for the land with the cave entrance on it and after that he opened this up to the public and started giving guided tours through here. So let’s go back to 1842 and you’re in your how and you’re coming down here now today you have light set up all over this place and it there’s a brick walkway.

What Would Have Been Like For Him

I mean what he had like a torch or something? How would he have kind of maneuver down? Oil lanterns were used as a light source back then and with an oil lantern down here you’re pretty much finding your way around in pitch blackness being able to see no more than five feet ahead of you. This cave without any light is pitch black and without light of some kind it would be nearly impossible to find your way out. God believe it or not that was my first time on a boat in a cave so thank you for that you’re welcome, but I hear you have more to do than just the cave itself right absolutely you plan on spending the entire day up here and if you want to spend a day here, how can you find out more? information all the information you need can be found on our website, Wwl Caverns calm as well as our facebook page. Guy thank you so much it was awesome you’re welcome Raj What exits this way? Brooke great yeah?
